The Rail-Trail Council of NEPA is holding a second public meeting regarding the Feasibility Study being conducted on the Endless Mountains Trail (Montrose to Alford). It will take place at 7pm on March 14, 2011 at the Endless Mountains Health Systems Clinic, 506 Grow Ave, Montrose

As a review, The Council is undertaking the study with funds from the PA DCNR and matching funds from the Rail-Trail Council and the Dept of Community and Economic Development. Strauss & Associates is conducting the project which identifies trail support, existing and potential trail users, concerns and obstacles. Public input is a very important part of the trail study.

This public meeting is targeted at the adjacent landowners along the trail in order to address their questions and concerns on the proposed trail re-establishment. The first public meeting was held on January 25th and was open to anyone interested in the future development of the trail. Many enthusiastic trail users and supporters attended that meeting. There was only a couple of members from Susquehanna County Snowmobilers’ Association in attendance. Attendees reviewed trail maps and offered their suggestions. It was obvious that many local trail users would like to see the trail re-established as a well-managed and maintained rail-trail. (that is where we can come into play folks) The biggest complaint was out-of-control ATV use and abuse.

One of the other issues for adjacent landowners was the lack of communication of past owners of the trail system, that had changed with this group as you can see by this meeting. Adjacent landowners can also contact the Rail-Trail Council with their concerns and questions if unable to attend on the 14th. The council is also available to meet on an individual basis if necessary. The Rail-Trail office is located in Union Dale and can be reached at (570) 679-9300 or email trails at nep dot net

As you may know I am involved with the legislative side of all things concerning sportsmen and conservation. Just got this heads up from Rail Trail Conservancy and while you may think this does not effect us directly it does. The monies we receive in part are derived from this funding. I will keep everyone posted if a phone call campaign is needed to voice our support of keeping the funding alive.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has received word that a devastating attack on trails, walking and bicycling could happen this week.

Though we do not know details yet, we anticipate a congressional amendment that could do away with or hobble programs like Transportation Enhancements (the nation’s largest funding source for trails, walking and bicycling), Recreational Trails Program and Safe Routes to School. Therefore, we are working with many other organizations to defeat such a damaging amendment.

No action is needed on this front today; we just wanted to give you a heads-up to expect an action alert from us in the coming days.
If it comes, please do not delay in speaking up: If such an amendment is offered, we might have mere hours to respond.

Thank you in advance,
