Hello everyone, Sunday January 15th, at 1:00 PM, I would like to meet at the New Milford Pump and Pantry to establish the new trail entrance on Peck Hill. This week we received approval to establish a trail head behind the Pump and Pantry. I do realize that this is short notice, but with the Poker Run coming up on January 28th, I wouldn’t like to leave this to the last minute. At this point I do not know what we will need to open the trail entrance, but if anyone can attend and bring saws, pruners, etc. it would be appreciated. Please pass this on to other members if you can.

Thank you.

I ran the CanAm groomer without the drag from Andre’s to Harry’s via Alford yesterday and cleaned up a lot of debris, a downed tree on the trolley tracks, branches, pricker bushes, some large ruts, etc… The trail is in pretty good shape; now I just hope the snow can hold on for Sunday.

The trolley tracks (trail 1) are in good shape. A little bumped up on the Montrose side of the falls (I also cleaned up some brush and overhanging branches on the falls.), but smooth back out once you pass the falls heading towards Alford. There are two small washouts about 300 yards past the falls, but they can be easily navigated. The bottom of the trolley tracks, where they meet the railbed in Alford, is taking a beating from the runoff. I did hack down all of the pricker bushes along the uphill side of the trail so that it is much more comfortable to pass the washout on the snow. Prior to yesterday the pricker bushes grabbed you and tried ripping you completely off your sled!! It is fine to navigate through there now. There is a tree buried lengthwise in the snow that was too frozen in to start messing with, so you will have to watch out for that.

This heat has wiped out the snow on the road in Alford and trail 33 up the other side until you get past the plowed section, from that point up to trail 39 is nice riding. I cleaned up some brush on 38 and 39 (either one can be taken when heading over to Family Day) and they are both in fair shape. From there, trail 37 over to the Upper lake bridge and up the light line (36) is in great shape all the way up to Harry’s.

I also ran through the goat trail (31) and the Green Gables trail (30) up to Washburn road. I cut out the tree in the early part of the goat trail that has been in the way all year. I also did a lot of trimming along the way and worked on cleaning up the 4-wheeler damage some more and filling in any ruts I could.

I ran all these trails again today and did a little more work, and I think we are in pretty good shape for Sunday’s ride… again, as long as the snow holds on!

See you Sunday!

There has been a slight re-route of the Green Gables trail (30) right where it comes down to Washburn road off Willie’s property. The trail cuts through the woods instead of running down his driveway. I could only find two trail marker signs in the groomer so I placed one at each end. We definitely need to mark it better and I will get back over there once I can get a few signs. When you are heading up hill, take the trail to the right (lower trail through woods) once you have passed through the fence. This is marked at the top, but not when coming up from the bottom.

Please use this new trail instead of the road / driveway.

I will attach an image once I get a chance to update the map.

Conditions are great. Many New Milford trails need a light cleanup. Especially after the heavier snow and ice last week. I will make a run with tools today to do some trimming and possibly try to get the tree off the green gables trail if it isn’t too frozen in.

As many of the members are aware of, I have been working on the trail from Alford to Heart Lake (approximately 5 miles). I have tried to smooth out the trail where the January wash outs occurred and fixed or barricaded off where the major wash outs occurred. A lot of the trail is in pretty good shape, but there are areas that are still rough. The trail at the Alford end is open, but rough. I will try to keep an eye on the trail, but if anyone sees a problem, send me a pm and I’ll check it out. LJ

Everything is in surprising shape. The warmer temps, wind, and beating sun have been wiping out the snow in the fields, but the woods are in decent shape. We also road the N. Railbed trail down from Green Gables to the falls trail and the riding was fine because of the lack of traffic. With a little traffic the railbed will get bad very quickly. The falls trail was fine and the trolley tracks all the way into Montrose were in good to great shape. I will continue the Montrose part in the Montrose Trails section.
